What Are the Different Causes of a Red Eye Infection?

An optometrist examining a kid's red eye infection

Are your eyes looking red or bloodshot? Red eye is a common condition that is often a symptom of other eye problems. In this blog, we are going to look at the most common causes of red eye infections, as well as recommended treatment options. In case of doubt though, we highly recommend booking an appointment with your optometrist to diagnose the exact cause of your red eye infection.

What is a Red Eye?

This common condition is due to the enlargement or inflammation of the blood vessels on the surface of the eyes, thus causing the whites of the eyes to look red or bloodshot.

Causes of Red Eye Infections

Here are some common causes of red eye:

  • Allergies – Allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander, and mould can cause allergic conjunctivitis. This condition is also usually accompanied by sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes.

  • Blepharitis – This condition is caused by an inflammation or infection along the edges of the eyelids. In addition to causing the eyes to appear red, this condition can also accompanied by intermittent blurry vision, crusty eyelashes, and scaly eyelids.

  • Dry eye – Eye redness can also occur due to dry eye syndrome, which is caused by insufficient tear production. Other symptoms of this condition include blurry vision and a gritty sensation in the eyes.

  • Eye injury – Trauma and injuries to the eye can also cause redness, along with inflammation and pain.

  • Glaucoma Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that affects the optic nerve. In acute cases, it can also cause a painful red eye.

  • Pink eye Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, refers to an inflammatory condition that affects the clear membrane that covers the whites of the eyes, as well as the inner surface of the eyelids. It also causes the eyes to appear red.

  • Iritis – Iritis or anterior uveitis is an inflammation inside the eye which causes a sore, red, light-sensitive eye.  It is more common in people with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis but can happen to anyone at any time.  It requires appropriate diagnosis and treatment to hasten recovery time and limit possible long term complications.

  • Digital eye strain – An unhealthy amount of screen time can cause digital eye strain. This can cause the eyes to appear bloodshot. Other common symptoms are blurry vision, headaches, and fatigue.

  • Eye infections – Viral and bacterial infections can also cause the eyes to appear red. Other common symptoms include soreness and discharge coming from the eyes. If you suspect that you are suffering from an eye infection, we recommend scheduling an appointment with your optometrist as soon as possible for appropriate treatment.

Treatment Options for a Red Eye

If you are suffering from a red eye infection, the best course of action is to seek medical attention promptly by making an appointment with your optometrist. In the meantime, we recommend giving your eyes plenty of rest. You can also use over-the-counter lubricating eye drops and cool compresses to soothe the inflammation and dryness of your eyes.
